Maritime history is the study of human interaction and activity at sea. It encompasses a broad thematic spectrum of history, often using a global approach, although national and regional histories remain predominant. As an academic subject, in many cases it crosses the boundaries of standard disciplines, focusing on understanding humanity’s diverse relationships with the world’s oceans, seas, and major waterways. Nautics is defined as the «science or art of navigation,» and its history records and interprets the evolution of knowledge, the creation or invention of equipment and instruments, and the consequences of discoveries linked to maritime navigation.
Until the mid-twentieth century, researchers approached the study of maritime history by differentiating three major unrelated areas: maritime explorations, the maritime scenarios of war conflicts and aspects directly linked to the economy (typically the exploitation of resources, the transport of goods and international trade). A paradigm shift then took place and maritime history was considered as a broad and global subject, intertwined with the total field of history as a whole, susceptible to be observed with the theoretical tools of other social and cultural disciplines.
